On yer bike...

I awoke this morning to be told by my good lady that my bike had been half inched. ( Stolen: for those of you wot don't talk cockney)

i can't really complain too much, it was a piece of crap and i suspect that i left it unlocked when i last used it.
By coincidence, i had the previous night been considering a post about the beautiful BMX bikes of the 80's.

I had 3 in total. My favourite being the last one: A PK Ripper. It took me the whole year to save up for it.
Here is a great example:

I built mine by hand from a frame and forks set. I Had super wide CW bars, Blue mushroom grips, Whitewall tyres on White Skyway 5 spoke Mags.
It was the height of BMX fashion.
And it was a very fashion led scene. Every couple of months a new 'must have' grip or pedal shape would come out. They were like works of art to us and i guess it was a lot like the Custom Car scene but for kids.

SE Bikes who made the Ripper, now produce it again and do larger versions which are expensive but tempting. I have to get a new bike but much as i would love one - i need something more practical.
Looking for a new bike i have discovered that many of those companys who were BMX start ups are now major players.
Haro, Diamond Back, Mongoose. They were all part of the original BMX scene. It's good to see that these guys are thriving in what now seems to be an incredibly crowded industry.
Here's a gallery of some super cool tricked out 80's BMX bikes.
